Kitchen safety reminder following fires

Date published: 16 January 2012

Fire-fighters dealt with ten kitchen fires around Greater Manchester over the weekend – two of which were in the Rochdale borough.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue service is reminding people of the importance of safety in the kitchen in the wake of the fires.

Some useful tips include: do not take attention off cooking and try to avoid cooking after drinking alcohol.

One of the incidents the fire service was called at Bentmeadows, Rochdale, at 12.45pm on Friday (13 January).

Two fire engines from Rochdale Fire Station were called to the address. A cooker and cupboard in the kitchen of a house was ablaze, fire-fighters used a hose reel to extinguish it and a fan to clear the smoke.

A 69-year-old man was suffering slightly from the effects of smoke but did not want to go to hospital.

On Saturday (14 January) crews dealt with a fire at Wince Brook Court, Grimshaw Lane, Middleton.

Fire-fighters were called to the address at 11.45pm. The fire involved a pan of food on the cooker and was out by the time they arrived so fire-fighters carried out a Home Safety Check while they were there.

Other fires occurred in Oldham, Fallowfield, Hindley, Moss Side, Whitefield, and Withington.
