Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t take to a new name – that’s why The Wishing Well has changed its name back to The Ladybarn.

JW Lees bought the pub on Harbour Lane, Milnrow, in 2008 and as well as undertaking a major refurbishment inside and out they renamed it The Wishing Well.

The Middleton-based brewery ran a competition and the new name was decided in honour of the wishing well situated outside the pub.

However, most of the regulars still call it The Ladybarn.

Manager, Rob MacSparran, said: “Customers just couldn’t get used to the new name.

“It had been The Ladybarn for so long and that’s what everyone remembers.”

It’s not just the name that has changed at the pub, there’s also a host of live entertainment every Friday and Saturday night and a free quiz night, with prizes, every Wednesday.

Rob added: “We want to put The Ladybarn back on the map. As well as live music we also have new menus serving freshly cooked food – with a three courses for £10 meal deal and two main meals for a tenner.”

This isn’t the first time the pub has changed its name. Since becoming a pub in the early 1900s, after originally being a farmhouse, it was called the Railway Hotel. Subsequent names have included the Poacher’s Pocket and the Hungry Horse.
