Five star staff strike gold

Date published: 06 January 2012

Five members of NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale’s (NHS HMR) staff have been selected as winners of the Trust’s most recent Going for Gold Stars awards, following a record breaking 22 nominations.

Going for Gold Stars is a quarterly awards scheme that has been developed by NHS HMR to recognise staff who provide an outstanding service or go the extra mile. The awards are nominated and judged by staff working within the Trust.

In joint first place were Charlotte Booth, Scheduled Care Commissioning Manager and Matthew Dearden, IT Service Delivery Manager.

Ms Booth was nominated for the award by her colleague Jeanette Leach, Unscheduled Care Commissioning Manager, for her exceptionally high standard of work.

As well as leading on 32 scheduled work programmes for NHS HMR and the Specialist
Commissioning Work Programme across Greater Manchester, Ms Booth was nominated for the outstanding work that she has recently undertaken on the Any Qualified Provider (AQP) framework. Her work on this for NHS HMR has recently been commended by NHS Greater Manchester; Ms Booth recently represented NHS Greater Manchester at a Department of Health event in London.

On winning the award Ms Booth said: "I was shocked when I found out I had been nominated for the award, and even more so when I was told that I had been selected as joint first. It is really nice to be and feel appreciated."

Mr Dearden was nominated by his line manager Les Webb, Head of IT, in recognition of his hard work, conduct, dedication and loyalty to the PCT and for going the extra mile to support services across the organisation and in our GP Practices. In particular the move of East Street Surgery to Croft Shifa Health Centre, which without his input would not have been open to patients as scheduled.

Mr Dearden, said: “I was delighted to be nominated for such a generous award and even more so to be a joint winner with Charlotte. I would like to say thank you to Les for my nomination, which was a real surprise, and also thank you to everybody else who worked hard in the preparation, planning and on site over the weekend to ensure that East Street's doors could open to patients on the Monday morning."

The Going for Gold Stars award usually recognises one individual or team as the winner. However, because the Trust received such a high number of quality nominations for the December awards, the judging panel decided to recognise and reward the hard work and achievements of a further three members of staff as a special Christmas gift.

The successful winners were Amanda Clegg, Primary Care Manager, Lindsay Crabtree, Primary Care Contracts Manager and Ashley Hill, Project Support/Co-ordinator for the Primary Care Commissioning Team.

Karen Hurley, Associate Director, Commissioning, said: “I'm delighted that members of my team were successful, I did put several nominations forward, this was to show my appreciation to the teams for all their hard work and commitment, this can be a very difficult time of year for some people, and at the moment a lot of people are feeling insecure and vulnerable about the future, but continue regardless to come to work, be positive and give 110%. Well done and thanks to everyone!”

David Edwards, Acting Chairman said: “It is important to recognise the hard work and positive attitude of our staff during this challenging time and I am delighted to see that we have had so many nominations, congratulations to all the winners and all those who were nominated.”
