Rochdale Infirmary’s Urgent Care Centre (UCC) has treated more than 35,000 patients since it opened, figures have revealed.
The UCC opened on 4 April to replace the A&E department and walk-in centre at Rochdale Infirmary.
The Centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provides treatment for people who have a minor injury or minor illness. It consists of a team of GPs, emergency and nurse practitioners, fully qualified nursing staff and has support from senior medical staff and access to X-Ray facilities and blood testing.
Dr Anton Sinniah, consultant physician and clinical director unscheduled care at Rochdale Infirmary, said: “The UCC is staffed by a team of GPs and nurse practitioners who are able to deal with the majority of adults and children suffering from minor injuries and minor illness.
“If we find a patient has a more serious problem we will arrange a prompt transfer to one of the Trust’s A&E departments in Oldham, North Manchester or Bury.
“Whilst we are happy to see and treat people with minor injuries or minor illness (such as coughs, colds, tummy upsets etc) we would stress that adults with chest pains, or anyone with breathing difficulties or serious illness should ring 999. Advice as to the most appropriate place to go can always be sought via NHS direct on 0845 4647.
“Over the Christmas and new year bank holiday I would ask people to be aware that whilst we no longer have an A&E department here at Rochdale Infirmary, the Urgent Care Centre and our staff here are able to deal with minor injuries such as cuts, bumps, sprains, burns, fractures and minor complaints.”
