Watch out for pickpockets, say transport police

British Transport Police is warning all rail users to be on their guard to beat pickpockets.

Christmas, a time when people often carry large amounts of cash for shopping – and are distracted by thoughts of presents and large numbers of other shoppers – presents a wealth of opportunities for criminals looking to make easy money.

Sadly, the gains made by criminals can ruin Christmas for their victims.

British Transport Police is running operations throughout the festive season to thwart thieves and to keep shoppers safe, but there are steps people can take to protect themselves from opportunistic criminals.

Gill Smyth, BTP crime reduction advisor, said: “Most pickpockets and thieves will look for easy targets – those people who are less likely to notice if something (a purse, wallet or bag) is taken.

“To avoid becoming a target, always look as though you are alert and completely aware of what is happening around you.

“If you are carrying a handbag, never leave it unattended and ensure, if possible, it is always securely fastened and positioned in front of you where you will notice people trying to access it.

“Similarly, if you are carrying a wallet or purse, never sort through cash or cards in busy public places and always ensure your purse or wallet is kept in a fastened or zipped pocket or bag that would be difficult for thieves to access.”

Gill added: “At Christmas we also need to be completely aware of our shopping bags – the last thing we want is for someone’s Christmas to be spoiled by thieves stealing presents.

“Keep your bags in sight at all times and, where possible, reduce the number of bags you are carrying by placing items together – it is much more difficult for thieves to be successful if you are only carrying a small number of bags. You will be much more aware of what you are carrying and will more easily notice if a bag is missing.”
