Recycling helps those in need

Date published: 20 December 2011

Vulnerable people around Greater Manchester have been receiving recycled furniture thanks to a scheme at the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Chichester Street, Rochdale.

Staff at Chichester Street have been checking unwanted furniture as it arrives to identify suitable items for the charity. Between April and November a total of 843 pieces of furniture have been recycled as part of the scheme.

The project is being run by Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority together with Mustard Tree, a charity which helps homeless and marginalised people.

Martin Burke, Cabinet Member for Internal and Environmental Services at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “It’s wonderful that unwanted furniture from the borough is being used to help people who will really benefit from it.

“Recycling also helps the environment and saves the council from having to pay for the furniture to go to landfill.

“Residents can play their part by bringing to the attention of staff at Chichester Street any furniture which they think will be suitable for recycling and then placing the items in the Re-use Container.”
