Date published: 19 December 2011
The Rochdale Bangladeshi Partnership Project celebrated ‘Bijoy Debosh’ on Friday (16 December).
The Partnership arranged its quarterly meeting to coincide with the day - the day when Bangladesh gained victory from the liberation war 40 years ago.
At the meeting the members discussed the historic day, as Bangladesh remembers the 3million people who lost their lives, in one of the worst genocides in living memory.
The Bangladesh flag was flown outside Rochdale Town Hall in honor of the 3million people who died in the war.
Mohammed Dobir Miah, the secretary of RBPP said: “The Rochdale Bangladeshi Partnership Project would like to wish everyone a belated Bijoy Debosh on the occasion of the 40th.
“We remember all those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of Bangladesh - we salute them for giving us the freedom Bangladesh and Bangladeshis enjoy today.
“We hope that the RBPP can provide a platform for the British born Bangladeshi’s to learn about their roots and culture.
“We also hope that the wider communities can learn and understand Bangladesh and its history.
“We would also like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a happy Christmas and a very prosperous new year.”
At the meeting the RBPP also discussed the past year and the plans for 2012 including a heritage project entitled “Sylhet to Rochdale”, which will bring about training, exhibitions and resources for the young people of the borough and will highlight the journey of Bangladeshi’s living in Rochdale.
