Co-op film puts local talent in the frame

Date published: 16 December 2011

A new film charting Rochdale’s historic role in the birth of the Co-operative Movement is giving budding film stars the chance to make their screen debuts.

The film is being backed by The Co-operative Group and made by The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy to mark next year’s International Year of Co-operatives.

In recognition of the borough’s legacy, auditions for roles as extras were held last month at Rochdale Town Hall with more than 100 hopefuls competing for parts.

This week, meanwhile, has seen some of the cast at the magnificent building to take part in shooting for the film.

It promises to be essential viewing for anyone with an interest in Rochdale’s history and the origins of a movement which now has 800 million members around the world.

Councillor Colin Lambert, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The organisers have told us they were delighted with the response to their appeal for extras while local people will also be helping on set, including in the makeup and wardrobe departments.

“Through its role in the founding of the Co-operative Movement, the borough has had a positive impact on millions of people around the world.

“We are now determined to use our legacy to enrich the lives of our own residents and the film is an excellent example of this.

“To celebrate our status as World Capital of Co-operatives and the 2012 International Year of Co-operatives there will be many more projects in the next 12 months that will benefit both local people and their communities.”
