Man charged following cash-in-transit robbery

A man from Middleton has been charged after a substantial amount of cash was stolen during a robbery at a supermarket.
Jason Richard Butterworth, 33, of Higher Wood Street, Middleton, is charged with robbery and handling stolen goods and is due before Oldham Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday 14 December 2011).
At about 9.20am on Friday 21 October 2011, police were called to the Asda on Greenfield Lane in Shaw following reports of a robbery.
Officers attended and discovered three men, armed with a sledgehammer and wearing balaclavas, had threatened cash delivery drivers making a drop-off to the supermarket Automatic Telling Machine (ATM) before stealing a substantial amount of money.
A 30-year-old man arrested on suspicion of robbery remains on bail until 21 March 2012 pending further inquiries.
