Police given more time to question man arrested in connection with death of Nellie Geraghty

Police have been given more time to question a man arrested in connection with the death of Nellie Geraghty.

The 37-year-old man was arrested on Friday (9 December) on suspicion of murder. He was also arrested in relation to a robbery that occurred on Baillie Street, Rochdale, shortly after 4.00pm Friday.

Officers have been granted a warrant of further detention for 36 hours to continue questioning the suspect.

Inquiries are continuing and police are urging anyone with information in relation to the death of Nellie Geraghty, or the whereabouts of her missing belongings, to contact police on 0161 856 5448. Alternatively you can pass information to the police anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Mrs Geraghty, aged 79, was found in the alleyway leading from Elizabeth Grove to Kershaw Street in Shaw shortly before midday on Thursday 24 November 2011.  She was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital with serious head injuries but she sadly died at about midnight on Friday 25 November 2011.

Her handbag, which contained the ashes of her husband Frank, was missing. The strap was still in Mrs Geraghty's hand. The ashes have still not been recovered.
