High flyers learn more about sixth form

Rochdale Sixth Form College played host to some of the borough’s most talented Year 11 students and their parents this week at a special Gifted and Talented Open Evening, which saw more than 200 visitors come through the doors.

As well as the opportunity to show the College and its facilities off to their parents, the students, many of whom attended the Gifted and Talented Summer School held in July, were given further details about how the most academically able are nurtured at Rochdale Sixth Form College.

Presentations included details of the RSFC Honours Programme, which is designed to stretch and support those wishing to apply to Oxbridge or take the most competitive degrees; while also offering specialist advice through the College’s established links with some of the UK’s most selective universities.

Paul Howarth, an English teacher at Rochdale Sixth Form College and himself an alumnus of Cambridge University, was one of the staff members to supervise the event. He said: “The event was brilliantly well attended, and we were delighted to welcome back so many of the students who took part in the summer school.

“The focus at the College is on helping every student achieve their full academic potential and undoubtedly it is an especially stimulating environment for the more gifted student.

“Certainly, we hope to be working with many of these young brains in September as they begin to study for their A levels.”
