Bus station escalator out of service until February

Date published: 07 December 2011

One of the escalators in Rochdale bus station is currently out of service.

The escalator carrying passengers down into the concourse area next to the bus station will be out of service until February 2012 due to availability of parts.

Michael Renshaw, TfGM’s Bus and Rail Director, said: “Unfortunately due to the age of the escalator, the part required has to be manufactured and will therefore not be available until mid-February.

"We are trying to get the part quicker and will make the repairs as soon as possible.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused to passengers during this period.

"The remaining escalator, taking passengers up out of the station is working and the lift is also available.”

Passengers who experience any difficulties should contact a member of bus station staff for assistance.

Councillor Zulfiqar Ali wrote to Transport for Greater Manchester about the matter in November – he has questioned why it has taken until now to take action and described the situation as “unacceptable.”

He said: “TFGM can blame the age and lack of parts for the problem, but the delay in rectifying the problem lies squarely with them.

“In the meantime shoppers, council employees in the black box and bus travellers all continue to be seriously inconvenienced."
