Number of TB cases in Rochdale falls
Date published: 06 December 2011
The number of cases of tuberculosis (TB) in Rochdale has fallen, figures show.
A total of 42 cases were reported in 2010, compared with 48 cases in 2009.
The 42 cases, equate to a rate of 20.5 cases for every 100,000 of the population.
The figures and rates were published today in the multi-agency North West Regional TB Group’s annual report for 2010.
A total of 828 cases of tuberculosis (TB) were reported across the North West in 2010, which equates to a rate of 12 cases for every 100,000 of population, the highest rate in the region since enhanced surveillance of TB began in 1999.
Dr Marko Petrovic, the HPA’s TB lead for the North West, said: “We are working hard with colleagues from the NHS, the charity TB Alert and other partners to increase awareness of TB infection and its symptoms. Anyone who thinks they may have symptoms of TB should seek medical advice as soon as possible.”
TB is treatable with a six-month course of antibiotics and it is essential for patients to complete the full course of treatment. Patients who do not complete the course of treatment in its entirety risk developing a drug-resistant form of the infection, which greatly increases the risk to themselves and others.
Katie Dee, Assistant Director of Public Health at NHS North West, said: “It is important for healthcare professionals and people working with vulnerable groups in the North West to be aware of the symptoms of TB so that they can identify possible cases and refer them for investigation and, where necessary, treatment at an early stage.”
TB is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs. It is spread from person-to-person through coughs and sneezes, but only some people with TB are infectious and even then, you need close and prolonged contact with them to be at risk.
Any of the following symptoms may suggest TB: Fever and night sweats, persistent cough, losing weight and/or blood in the sputum (phlegm or spit).
