Beech House School

Date published: 06 December 2011

Belated congratulations go to Mrs Hawkins and the Year 11 boys from 2010. For the second year in succession Beech House was presented with a certificate for the Best GCSE Results achieved by Boys taking Business Studies at an English Independent School. The original notification failed to arrive by post, but better late than never. It is the third such award to be presented to the school.

The school won the Gold Award for the Rochdale in Bloom ‘Design a Poster’ competition, which was completed in June 2011. The ‘Township in Bloom’ competition is an annual event in which Rochdale Township competes against others, including local challengers Bury and Heywood, to showcase their horticultural achievements.

Year 6 along with Anusia Battersby and Raeesah Shahid from Year 10 joined Dr Hudson and Mrs Grange at a very early 6.00am start for a four hour journey to Bristol. They were all finalists in the BNA (British Naturalists Association) Ward Cup and Blake Shield competition. This year it was a special year as it was the 25th Anniversary of the Award. The senior pupils were runners up for the third time in succession. The Key Stage Two project were also runners up for the second time in three years. Both groups took home two more beautiful certificates of merit. The Year 6 project was entitled ‘Save our Trees’, where the class compared trees along Manchester Road with those found in the woods behind school. Anusia and Raeesah studied Bees over the summer holidays. Congratulations to all pupils.

The Nursery children enjoyed an afternoon visit from the Oral Health team. They took turns to show how well they could brush ‘Kev the Crocodile’s’ teeth and were very good at identifying healthy and unhealthy foods from a selection in a bag. The children took great pride in wearing their stickers afterwards, as a memento of the visit

Year 9 students went to the Manchester Art Gallery. The visit proved to be a success, as the pupils learnt a great deal about Ford Madox Brown, a Pre-Raphaelite Pioneer. This was a major exhibition of Ford Madox Brown’s work since 1964. The show brought together 140 paintings and drawings, including his epic painting of Victorian life, work and The Last of England. This visit linked well with the current unit being studied - ‘Events in our lives’.

Olesia Tomkinson (10D) has been chosen to dance in the forthcoming pantomime ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at Rochdale’s Gracie Fields Theatre. Starring alongside Olesia, to name but a few, are Kirsty-Leigh Porter of ‘Emmerdale’ fame, as Dorothy; the ‘legend’ Ken Morley, who once played the mischievous Reg in ‘Coronation Street’; Gareth Oliver from ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and Aaron Sidwell who many will know as Steven Beale from ‘Eastenders’. Olesia will dance in 6 shows between 24 and 31 December, alongside other ‘amazing dancers’. Good Luck to Olesia ......Beech House has got talent!

Beech House under 14 soccer team entertained a good Shaftesbury House team recently. Beech House entered the game as favourites but Shaftesbury House played their part in what was a fantastic game. Beech went on to win 4:2. Man of the Match was James Hart for an outstanding display.

Beech House then travelled to the Ardwick Power league to play Southern Cross in a small school's league football match. The Beech House boys gave a good account of themselves in a highly competitive game. Beech House took an early led through Max Atkins but the Southern Cross boys went into half time 4 – 2 up. The second half started brightly for Beech House with James Hart and Conor Leyland providing a sound defensive platform for the others to work off. At the end of the game Southern Cross took their chances and Beech House didn't, this was the difference between the two sides. The final score finished 8 – 4 to Southern Cross, leaving Beech House no room for further errors if they wish to retain the league title. The Beech House man of the match was again James Hart. He has shown an outstanding attitude towards each game and his positional play and awareness is second to none. Well done James!

Beech House U14’s travelled across the Pennines to play Basketball against Huddersfield Grammar School. Beech House started brightly with Kingsley Benson dominating play from the start. The team was well organised and communicated fantastically throughout. The time spent in Basketball practice has obviously paid off and Beech House looked good moving the ball forwards. At half time Beech House led 22 – 2 but Huddersfield Grammar rallied and came back at the team and played some good Basketball of their own. Aston Buckley led the Beech House charge to take back control of the game with some excellent defensive play and fantastic shooting. Aston then took the man of the match award as Beech House ran out 40 – 10 winners.

House Point totals for the week: Mercury 61, Neptune 60, Saturn 59and Jupiter 55.

The Pupil of the Week certificates go to:
Nursery: Ayaan Hussain
Reception: Maximus Hayes-Thulborn
