Rugby club bid to revive carnival

Date published: 06 December 2011

Mayfield Rugby Club is hoping to bring the annual Castleton Carnival back to life - and is calling on people to help.

The carnival, a highlight in Castleton’s social calendar, didn’t take place this year following years of dwindling numbers, but now the Rugby Club want to get it back on track.

They say the inactivity of the carnival has been a “sad loss” to Castleton and they want to “highlight this lovely, vibrant area of the borough.”

At a recent meeting of the Castleton Forum Mayfield’s new Development Officer Paul Scanlon-Wells revealed that the Castleton based club would like to become the organisers of the rebirth of the carnival in 2012.

Mr Scanlon-Wells said: "I mentioned that we at Rochdale Mayfield felt that the Castleton Carnival was an important part of the community and as we are the major provider of sports provision in the area we felt that we had the ability to provide people to drive the idea forward as well as an area large enough to utilise for the people of Castleton."

A meeting to look at setting up a group to assist in the project development has been organised and all those with ideas and advice to move the project forward are invited.

Mr Scanlon-Wells said: "I would like to ask any interested parties to attend a meeting on Monday 19 December at 7.30pm at our clubhouse which can be accessed from Keswick Street or Chadwick Lane to look into moving the project forward to be held provisionally on Sunday July 29 2011."
