Gents have a moustache-tic ‘Movember’

Date published: 03 December 2011

Five male staff members from Hopwood Hall College have spent the whole of November growing moustaches in aid of prostate cancer.

The gents took part in ‘Movember’ - a national fundraising campaign aimed at raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health, such as prostate cancer – and raised £150.

The game-for-a-laugh men were Uniformed Public Services teachers Simon Pogson and Kevin Tomlinson, Justin Sanderson who works in the College’s Corporate Services department, Peter Mullen who works in the College’s in Finance department and Terry Morley the Curriculum Manager for Uniformed Public Services at the College.

Peter Mullen said: “My ‘Mo’ has certainly been a talking point in College; I hope we have made more people aware of this annual fundraising event for men’s health.”

Terry Morley heard about Movember from his colleague Kevin Tomlinson who had taken part before; he said he felt compelled to don a moustache himself this year as prostate cancer is one of the largest killers of young men; sadly, Terry, who used to work in the armed services, personally knows of 3 ex-soldiers who died tragically young from this, often silent, killer.

When asked what the best thing about having the moustache is, Mr Morley said: “Knowing it’s for such a worthy cause.”

When asked what the worse thing about having the moustache is, he added: “Well, firstly, it’s driving me mad – the itch is almost unbearable! Secondly, my daughters (aged 3 and 10) refuse to give me a bedtime kiss; actually, come to think of it, I haven’t even had a kiss on the lips from my wife Elaine since October.”
