Waste decision boost for Sparth
Date published: 02 December 2011
Plans to improve and regenerate Sparth have been given a boost following a decision that most of Mandale Park will not be used for waste and recycling facilities.
The Greater Manchester Joint Waste Development Plan Document, which sets out how waste will be minimised and managed in the future, has been approved by the Planning Inspectorate and will be formally adopted by councils next year.
Mandale Park was originally included as a suitable site for waste management facilities but opposition from residents has resulted in the majority of the park being removed from the plan. The suitable area is now limited to the Sparth industrial area and a small section of adjoining open land.
Councillor Martin Burke, Cabinet Member for Internal and Environmental Services at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “This is great news for Sparth and Brimrod as it gives us the certainty we needed to start developing a masterplan to regenerate this area of the borough.
“We know from consultation with local people that they want to see some improvements to their local environment, including Mandale Park, and we’ll be looking at what’s possible within the limited resources available.”
