ASBO for gang members

Date published: 01 December 2011

Two men who caused extensive harassment, alarm and distress to residents in the Newbold area have been made the subject of an Anti Social Behaviour Order.

Khalid Kindilidis, 19, of Monton Street, Manchester and Haider Ali, 19, of Pike Street, Rochdale both received a 2 and a half year Anti Social Behaviour Order at Rochdale Magistrates Court.

Kindilidis, originally from London, came to Rochdale with the sole purpose of recruiting individuals from Rochdale to form a gang that will intimidate local residents, be involved in theft and robbery, threaten and intimidate staff and young people at Moss Street Youth Centre and flaunt their cannabis use. The gang was called Blue Crew later Blue Family Riders and their chosen area to pursue their reign of terror was Newbold. Ali, a local youth, became one of the main ringleaders of the gang.

Both offenders caused anti-social behaviour in the Newbold area and carried out their criminal activities on Rochdale Canal and surrounding areas.

When many of the original members faced custodial sentences or moved away from Rochdale following action from police and partner agencies, Kindilidis continued to recruit younger members, it was said he has a charismatic personality that drew young people to him.

Ali was known to police and partner agencies for low level nuisance and criminal activities in Rochdale, however following his association with Kindilidis, he became more of a prolific offender.

Their criminal activities and burglaries, in particular, finally caught up with them in July, when Kindilidis was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and on 5 September 2011 Ali was also sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. The Orders were sought to further protect people living and working on Newbold and break up the gang following their release from prison.

The Order was secured following evidence from local residents, staff at Moss Street Youth Centre, Rochdale Boroughwide Housing’s Legal Services and Enforcement Team, Community Safety and Police.

The Anti Social Behaviour Order prohibits Kindilidis and Ali from:

  • Acting in an antisocial manner
  • Having contact with a number of associates that were members or friends of the gang.
  • Having contact with youth workers named in the proceedings.
  • Entering the Newbold Estate.

Both Kindilidis and Ali have caused extensive harassment, alarm and distress to residents, professionals and victims of their crimes for over a period of 12 months. The Order has been sought to protect these individuals and surrounding area from further ant-social behaviour from them.

Insp Michelle Hughes, said: “After consulting with our partner agencies, we believe these orders against Kindilidis and Ali are needed to protect the community, especially in the Newbold area where they committed a lot of their anti-social behaviour and criminal activities.

“It will also show Kindilidis, Ali and their associates there is no place for criminal activity and anti social behaviour in Rochdale and with partnership activity we will make it better for the public.”

Anyone who becomes aware of he pair breaching this order should contact the Police on 0161 872 5050.
