Students and staff dig deep for charity

Date published: 25 November 2011

Students and staff at Rochdale Sixth Form College have been digging deep in both their wardrobes and pockets recently for some charity fundraising with fancy dress days in aid of both The Breast Cancer Campaign and the Children in Need Appeal.

The ‘Wear it Pink’ campaign was organised by Kelly Minshull, a Year 13 student studying Double Health & Social Care, and ICT, and saw practically everyone in the College turn up in a pink item of clothing.

Kelly also organised a nail art stall and a cake sale, which together with the contribution for the ‘Wear it Pink’ donations, raised an impressive £495 for The Breast Cancer Campaign.

George Thomas, a psychology teacher at the College, praised Kelly’s efforts. He said: “This is a very worthy charity and we are delighted to have contributed such as a significant amount to their work. The day was a huge success and stands testament not only to Kelly’s organisational skills, determination and vision, but also to the college as a whole.

“There is a real culture of taking charge and making a difference at Rochdale Sixth Form College and our young people are never afraid to find a collective voice and show support for a cause that they believe in. We are very proud of their efforts.”

Meanwhile, for Children in Need, many students arrived at College wearing their pyjamas. Led by Steph Wild, hundreds of students donned their nightwear to raise a huge £403 for the charity. Students Hasina Begum and Aqsa Sajad also made some beautiful bracelets, which they sold at College in aid of the charity.

Steph, Deputy Leader of the Student Council, said: “It was a great day and everyone had a lot of fun, but the best part was undoubtedly raising so much money for Children in Need. We were really thrilled with the final total as we hadn’t imagined we’d achieve nearly so much.”
