Royal visit and careers fair encourage students into construction

Falinge Park High School, Rochdale, welcomed HRH The Duke of Gloucester to officially open their new ICT learning centre.

The visit coincided with a construction careers day involving local industry employers, aimed at encouraging students to consider a career in construction.

The event was organised by the charity Construction Youth Trust as part of their commitment to promoting education, training and employment opportunities in construction to young people from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Robin Lonsdale, Headteacher at Falinge Park High School, said: “Our school prides itself on the low numbers of children who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). By running events of this nature we can try to build in aspirations and relevance to what the school offers. In turn, employers will recruit a grounded workforce that has realistic expectations and the skills they need.

“The forty students chosen to attend the day were very lucky given the demand for places at the event, and we hope that the experience will prove very worthwhile.

“We are very grateful to His Royal Highness for joining us today and to Construction Youth Trust for organising the event.

“Students and employers have gained a lot, but in the end, society will be the real winner.”

HRH The Duke of Gloucester is Patron of Construction Youth Trust and before commencing his royal duties in 1972 he practised architecture with a London firm. His Royal Highness has retained his interest in architecture and is a member of RIBA and a commissioner for English Heritage.

Christine Townley, Director, Construction Youth Trust said: "We are delighted to be joined today by our Patron HRH The Duke of Gloucester and are very grateful for his continuing support.

“We would also like to thank the employers for showing their support and commitment to young people in Rochdale.

“By showcasing the breadth of opportunities available in construction and giving students the chance to have one-to-one sessions with real employers we hope to build their career aspirations and help them to forge relationships aimed at creating work placements, apprenticeships and ultimately full-time employment.”
