The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Alan Godson, Simon Danczuk MP, Councillors, Cadets, serving soldiers and the British Legion and Fusiliers Association met briefly following the Armistice Day ceremony in Rochdale to receive an update of the ongoing restoration and improvement projects with Rochdale Memorial Gardens.
Jason Addy, Chairman of Friends of Rochdale Memorial Gardens, said: “During a time of poignant reflection close to the Cenotaph, it was an honour to meet and speak with current and past members of our armed forces, their families and friends who so cherish the Memorial Gardens.
“Their message was clear - this important civic space must remain a green oasis of quiet contemplation and remembrance.
“At a time of considerable budget cuts and further funding threats, it was an opportunity to thank Rochdale Council workers and officers for their ongoing hard work and commitment to the Memorial Gardens.
“For many local people, this precious area is a source of civic pride and an example of what can be achieved with good consultation and public co-operation on a very modest budget.”
