Keep away from the fakes

Date published: 16 November 2011

With Christmas fast approaching, consumers are being warned to avoid the temptation to buy counterfeit sports goods - even if it seems like a bargain.

Whether it is trainers, football tops or a range of other sporting items, counterfeiters are always on the look-out for potential new victims.

Whilst these goods may be cheaper than those from reputable suppliers, they will be of inferior quality and likely to need replacing before long. There is also a strong link around the country between fakes and fake websites and crimes such as drug dealing and benefit fraud.

As part of National Consumer Week (21-25 November), the Trading Standards Institute has issued the following five point plan to help people keep clear of the counterfeiters.

C Choose your shopping outlets and websites carefully.

H Help yourself. If the deal is too good to be true then it probably is.

E Ensure you look for authentic branding and holograms.

C Contact the authorities if you are concerned.

K Keep a copy of your order and receipts.

Remember: If you are not sure, get advice. If you think it’s dodgy, report it.

Councillor Martin Burke, Cabinet Member for Internal and Environmental Services at Rochdale Borough Council, said:“Fake goods are anything but a bargain as they will be of poor quality and soon need replacing. If you buy them you could also be inadvertently helping fund even more serious criminal activity such as drug-dealing.

“In addition, you are also taking money away from reputable traders who are already having to cope with the tough economic climate.

“If you are suspicious about any goods you are being offered then report it to Consumer Direct and help stamp out counterfeiters.”
