Rochdale apprentices build for the future

Date published: 12 November 2011

A group of five apprentices from across Rochdale have completed a course designed to increase their skills and qualifications, and provide valuable work experience.

The apprentices were enrolled on a 12-month scheme run by Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale and Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH), called the Neighbourhood Environmental Action Team (NEAT).

NEAT participant Kayne Walsh, aged 22 from Middleton, said: “I got a lot out the NEAT programme. Not only did I learn a load of new skills, I gained a diploma and gained real work experience out on site in Rochdale.”

As part of the NEAT scheme, apprentices completed a wide range of training including the NVQ Level 2 Award in Horticulture. The apprentices put their skills into action, working alongside a number of contractors on two flagship developments commissioned by RBH.
The NEAT participants were recruited back at the start of October 2010 and have since been involved in the landscaping of the Dover Street and Romney Avenue new build housing developments in Rochdale. The work included planting, fencing, patios, and a communal area with seating and pergolas.

Gareth Swarbrick, Chief Executive of RBH said: “It is brilliant to see the results of this scheme. This is helping to maximise the impact of our newbuild development on the neighbourhood not only by improving the environment but by increasing skills and job opportunities for local people.”

Teresa Jennings, Operations Director for Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale added: “The NEAT partnership has been very successful.

“We’ve equipped the young people with a useful a set of skills, helped them gain qualifications and provided some valuable work experience.

“We’re very proud of the contribution made by the apprentices on two of Rochdale Boroughwide Housing’s newest developments.”
