Rochdale marks Armistice Day
Date published: 11 November 2011
People gathered at the Rochdale cenotaph on Friday morning (11 November 2011) to observe a two-minute silence to mark Armistice Day.
Maroons were fired from the grounds of the parish church by Rochdale Town Hall to mark the beginning of the silence at 11.00am and again at the end.
There then followed music from Wardle High School band and a short service led by Canon Alan Shackleton.
MP for Rochdale, Simon Danczuk, laid a wreath on the cenotaph.
Representatives from the fire service, the police force and the council also attended.
Cannon Shackleton said: “It is very good indeed to see so many people making an act of remembrance.”
The Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Alan Godson said observing the two minute silence was “very important” and described the turnout as “very impressive.”
Small wooden crosses bearing poppies were placed into the ground by the side of the cenotaph following the service.
