College visited by renowned ‘Schollar’

Applied Science students at Rochdale Sixth Form College welcomed renowned biologist from Reading University, John Schollar, to find out more about DNA profiling as part of their A Level curriculum.

Using state of the art equipment – usually reserved for university students and scientists, the Academic gave 35 Year 13 students a unique insight into cutting edge techniques behind DNA profiling and genetic fingerprinting. Through use of a Polymerase Chain Reaction machine, students were able to amplify DNA – a method commonly used by forensic scientists to extract evidence at crime scenes.

Mr Schollar, who is the Co-director of the National Centre for Biotechnology Education at The University of Reading, said: “It was a pleasure to lead this workshop – the standard of teaching and laboratory facilities at the College are excellent, but by giving the students access to this equipment, we were able to take their understanding of these molecular biological techniques to the next level.

“Every student was so eager to learn, and hopefully left the class feeling better equipped to tackle their A Level coursework.

“I hope each student goes on to excel in their A Level exams, and in their studies beyond.”

Applied Science student Lucy Taylor said: “I found the workshop with Dr Schollar really useful, as we were able to put into practice the theories that we had already learned in class.

“It certainly helped with my understanding of the topic, and hopefully this will show in my A Level coursework.”
