Support for ‘Clare’s Law’
Date published: 27 October 2011
MEP Paul Nuttall has voiced his support for the proposed 'Clare's Law' intended to help protect women from violent boyfriends.
The plans, currently being considered in Parliament, follow a campaign after the horrific killing of 36-year-old Clare Wood by a man she met on Facebook.
Unknown to her, George Appleton had a long record of violent behaviour against women and campaigners want a scheme to protect women from violence.
"I am all in favour of such a scheme," said Mr Nuttall, UKIP MEP for the North West. "The tragic killing of Clare Wood is particularly poignant for me as it happened in Salford, which is part of my constituency.
"Sadly domestic violence is all too common and it is wrong that any woman should suffer at the hands of a man. With more and more people meeting via the internet the risk of danger increases.
"The details of such a 'Clare's Law' have yet to be hammered out and obviously there would need to be careful checks in place. But I believe it is the right move. I am a firm believer that if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about.
"Violent men sacrifice their right to privacy about their past, it is far more important that those vulnerable to their aggression are protected," he added.
