Security advice as nights draw in

Remember: Alarm, Locks, Lights
As the clocks go back this weekend, police are urging residents to help beat burglars by taking simple steps to secure their homes.
There is usually an increase in break-ins as evenings become darker, and officers are asking householders to go ‘ALL’ out to beat thieves by remembering ‘Alarm, Locks and
Lights.’
This simple three-point message is a reminder to put the alarm on, lock all doors and windows and leave a light on when leaving your home empty. It is also a good idea to set timer switches to turn lamps and radios on and off.
Jackie Bell, crime reduction adviser for GMP's Rochdale Division, said: “We have worked hard over the last year to ensure residents across the borough are aware of how important it is to secure their homes against burglars.
“As the clocks go back, evenings become darker and create ideal opportunities for thieves.
”By remembering the simple ALL message every time you leave your property, you will make it less attractive to burglars.
“Doors and windows should also be locked even when you're in, as thieves are opportunists and it only takes them a few seconds to enter a property and steal items.”
