A daredevil team from the Pennine Acute Hospital Trust is getting ready to take part in a sponsored charity sky dive to raise money for the Trust’s ‘In Your Hands’ appeal at The Royal Oldham Hospital.
The team of ten will take part in a tandem dive in Lancaster on Saturday 19 November – they will exit the plane at 14,000ft and hurtle towards the ground at 120mph.
Money from the In Your hands Appeal, will go towards additional equipment to enhance the new women and children’s unit currently under construction at The Royal Oldham Hospital.
Volunteer co-ordinator, Mary Sunderland, organised the dive and is also taking part. She said: “I really wanted to do something different for charity, plus challenge myself, so the sky dive seemed the ideal choice.
“At the moment we have a number of paediatric nurses and volunteers signed up to take the plunge and we are aiming to raise at least £5,000. We have currently received a £900 pledge and so I’m urging everyone to please support this appeal.
“The ’In Your Hands’ appeal is such a fantastic cause which will help mothers, babies and children from all the local areas.”
The new unit will involve a major new four storey building, the refurbishment of existing wards, new delivery rooms, obstetric theatres, a paediatric theatre, maternity beds and most significantly - a brand new Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit.
Once the new development is complete, The Royal Oldham will be one of three regional centres providing the highest level of intensive care to the smallest and most vulnerable babies.
The new unit will house 37 neonatal cots and 110 expert staff will treat around 550 babies each year from Oldham, Rochdale and the surrounding areas. There will also be five en-suite bedrooms for parents to stay overnight.
