Rochdale joins ‘grey pride’ campaign
Date published: 19 October 2011
Age UK Metro Rochdale has given its support to the Grey Pride campaign.
Already backed by the likes of Angela Rippon, Tony Robinson and Jimmy Tarbuck, they are urging local people to join them in calling for a dedicated government Minister for Older People.
The UK now has more people over the age of 60 than those under the age of 16, but there isn’t a dedicated Minister for Older People.
Paul Gala, Chief Executive of Age UK Metro Rochdale, said: “We have a Minister for younger people, why don’t we have a Minister for older people? Especially when you consider our population is an aging one, over 10 million people alive today are expected to live to be 100, yet the older people still aren’t officially represented in the House of Commons.”
Mr Gala, added: “Every one of us is getting older, so even if you think you’re not there yet it is still something worth campaigning for.”
In order for a petition to be considered for debate in the House of Commons it needs at least 100,000 names on it, the Grey Pride petition currently stands at 90,200.
