Town centre firework display cancelled to save cash
Date published: 19 October 2011
Rochdale town centre’s firework display has been cancelled in a bid to save money.
The bonfire night firework display, which has attracted hundreds of people in the past, will be replaced this year with ‘Guy Fawkes themed’ activities.
Although there won’t be a display in the town centre there will still be three displays across the borough.
Rochdale Town Centre Management, the event’s organisers, say money saved from the event will be used to attract shoppers to the town centre.
A statement from Rochdale Town Centre Management’s Board of Directors, explains: “Lots of residents clearly like going to the fireworks and there will be three fantastic displays in the borough.
“Instead of a fireworks display in the town centre this year we’re supporting a day of Guy Fawkes themed family activities in our two shopping centres.
“We’ll also be shortly announcing an exciting programme of Christmas events in the town centre too, and using the money saved on fireworks to attract more shoppers into the town centre when the shops are open.”
Details of the exact events planned for the day are expected to be released this week.
