Overnight resurfacing of M62 underway

Overnight work to resurface sections of the M62 in Greater Manchester started on Monday night (17 October).

Slip roads and sections of the main carriageway in both directions between Junction 18 at Simister Island and Junction 22 at Rishworth Moor are being resurfaced in a £562,000 Highways Agency programme of overnight works.

The work, which will includes renewal of road markings, is due to be completed by Saturday 3 December.

All the work will be taking place overnight – between 10.00pm and 5.00am each night – with a 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers.

The main carriageway will be kept open throughout the road works period – on occasions with the hard shoulder in use as the only running lane - while the main carriageway is resurfaced and markings are renewed.

Slip roads will need to be closed completely for one or two nights at a time to allow resurfacing but clearly-signed diversions will be in place for those needing to join or leave the motorway.

The work will also require the overnight closure of Birch Services in alternate directions for up to two nights each.

Highways Agency project sponsor Jakub Malaj said: “This is vital, if routine, maintenance of this busy part of the regional motorway network to ensure that drivers can continue to enjoy safe, smooth and reliable journeys.

“We have timed the work to take place when traffic volumes are low and any inconvenience and delays to drivers should be kept to a minimum.”
