Police out in force against burglary

Date published: 18 October 2011

Police are working to reduce burglary as part of a co-ordinated operation across the Rochdale borough this week.

Officers are patrolling burglary hotspots and keeping an eye out for insecurities like open doors and windows. Residents leaving their properties vulnerable are being given advice, and a series of crime prevention road shows are being run at supermarkets throughout the week. Electronic signs displaying crime prevention tips will be shown on the borough’s main routes.

In addition, police are tracking down those wanted in connection with previous burglaries and are visiting offenders’ homes to ensure they are observing curfews.

Stop checks are being carried out on suspects, and second hand shops are being monitored to ensure stolen goods are not being handled.

Chief Inspector Nadeem Mir of Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale Division said: “The wide range of tactics being employed this week shows how seriously we take burglary, and how intent we are on bringing offenders to justice.

“There is usually an increase in break-ins at this time of year as evenings become darker, and I would remind residents to go all out to beat burglars by remembering alarms, locks and lights. The simple three-point message is a reminder to put the alarm on, lock all doors and windows and leave a light on when leaving your home empty.”
