Mini team in coast-to-coast bike ride

Date published: 09 October 2011

A team from Williams MINI in Rochdale are taking part in a 170-mile coast-to-coast bike ride to raise money for WheelPower.

MINI Manager, Paul DiClemente and his sales team, Lee Griffiths, Mark Hurstwill, Gavin Young and Mark Suthers will set off from Morecombe on Saturday (15 October) morning and plan to finish in Bridlington, North Humberside the next evening.

They will be accompanied by driving legend Paddy Hopkirk who won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in a MINI Cooper S. Paddy will be driving the support vehicle, not surprisingly a MINI and providing encouragement for the team as they aim to raise over £3,000 for the charity.

WheelPower is the national organisation for wheelchair sport in the UK. With BMW and MINI being an official partner to the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, the team at Rochdale wanted to support a charity that would give disabled people the opportunity to participate in sport.

Mr DiClemente, said: “We are delighted to have the support of Paddy who is a MINI legend to help us on this gruelling cycle ride. We have been training really hard, up to 90 miles a week and use the local Pennine roads between Yorkshire and Lancashire to help prepare for the tough climbs and distance. We’ve raised quite a lot already and would love to hit our target of £3,000 for WheelPower.”
