One hundred talented mathematicians from Oulder Hill Community School and Language College have attended a Maths Masterclass at Rochdale Sixth Form College, ahead of sitting their GCSE maths examinations in November.
As well as the Masterclass, packed with hints on how to achieve an A or A* grade, the Year 11 pupils enjoyed a tour of the College and a talk about careers in maths.
Tim Stonebanks, Head of Maths at Oulder Hill, who accompanied the pupils, said: “Our students and staff have had an informative and enjoyable afternoon.
“ It has been a good opportunity for them to spend time at the College, and the information they were given about the importance of mathematics in a variety of careers was particularly valuable.”
Sebastian Lyth, a pupil at Oulder Hill from Norden, added: “The Masterclass was good because it gave me an insight into College life and also how important and useful A Level maths is. I was really impressed with the College – it seems really nice and modern.”
Dan Cox, maths teacher at Rochdale Sixth Form College, who hosted the event, concluded: “The teaching staff had a great time working with the Oulder Hill students and would relish the opportunity to welcome them back next year to study for their A Levels.
“There was much enthusiasm for the subject and we wouldn’t be surprised if some went on to become our statisticians, accountants and even maths teachers of the future.”
