Market trader pays price for smuggled tobacco

Date published: 05 October 2011

A market trader from Rochdale who had 40 kilos of smuggled tobacco in boxes which he claimed contained flowers has been ordered to repay £23,292.

David Eatough, 31, along with his accomplice, Nadim Erkose, 46, from Goole in Humberside, were seen by HM Revenue and Customers officers unloading packages in Eatough’s driveway in January 2010. During a search of his Rochdale home officers witnessed them throwing £68,000 in cash over the garden hedge in an attempt to hide it.

Neither man involved claimed ownership of the cash thrown over the hedge and it was forfeited to the Crown.

Mike O’Grady, Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation for HMRC, said: “We’re determined to bring to justice criminals behind this type of fraud and take away the proceeds of their crime.”

Anyone with information regarding cigarette smuggling is urged to contact the Customs Hotline on 0800 59 500 or email customs.hotline@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
