World record attempt day draws in the crowds

The Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre has hosted an exciting Guinness World Record attempts day, as part of a bid to remind people that the centre is still there following the closure of TJ Hughes.
The day saw scores of people visit the centre attempting to break world records. It also marked the opening of a corridor through the old TJ Hughes unit to make the centre more accessible to visitors.
Big Al from Revolution radio was on hand to help with the record attempts which included the ‘World’s Largest Superman Dance,’ where participants attempted to make the dance, made famous by Black Lace, a new world record – 164 people took part, but fell short of making a new world record.
Centre Manager, Martin Ballard, said: “It was a real fun-filled day, and the centre felt busy all day – especially with it being so hot outside as it normally means we’ll be quiet.
“The Superman dance was a bit of fun and it certainly proved a talking point as it highlighted the fact that people could get through the centre easily once again.”
Other attempts saw Anthony McGinely fall just 3 seconds short of a new world record at typing the alphabet on an iPad.
The coffee cup tower was more of a challenge as the current world record of 2.8 metres survived with the nearest participant being Masood Hussain with a tower reaching 1.11 metres in the 3 minute time limit.
One world record that could have been claimed on the day was the ‘Most scones eaten in 3 minutes’ but not one challenger managed to eat a single one!
Competitor Mike Kelly won the quickest knockout on the Wii boxing competition with a time of 1 minute 39 seconds – but failed to knock the current world record holder off the top stop, as they hold it with a record of 8 seconds.
Many prizes were given away on the day, including an Apple iPad which was won by six-year-old Kamen Ray.
