The awards continue to be presented to Redwood School. The IAG award is a quality award which recognizes good careers information, advice and guidance and is awarded at three levels – bronze, silver and gold. Mrs Peel, Assistant Headteacher KS4, accepted the award at the presentation event at Lancashire Cricket Club last week. This acknowledges the high quality partnership work by our school staff and that of the Connexions Service in Rochdale.

Vocational Courses -Well done to those students from key stage 4 and post 16 who have made a great start to their college courses various activities such as motor vehicle, catering and hairdressing courses have been enjoyed by the students and staff

After School Clubs and Youth Clubs – there has been a terrific response to the After School Clubs, Evening Youth Clubs and our Saturday morning clubs! If you wish your child to attend after school clubs or the Youth Clubs on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings, 6pm – 8pm, please contact Mr David Butterworth in school.

Student Council elections are taking place for this year’s Student Council. The first meeting of the new council will be held on Tuesday 4 October.

Parents/Carers ‘Signalong‘ workshop – a whole school approach to communication has been a priority during the past 2 years. We are fortunate to have 3 excellent teaching assistants who are skilled in the delivery of the training. We wish to offer a workshop on Saturday 8 October 10 - 12 to parents / carers. If you would be interested or wish to have more details please contact Julie Walsh, Louis Walton or Sue Stridgen at school. Should you wish to attend you could utilize the Saturday Youth Clubs to support your child if required.

Key Stage 4 have been very busy this week, 4E have started to make grass heads. They have been looking at Olympic sports and even taking part in testing out some of the sports such as running and tennis.

4R are focusing on their chosen country for the Olympics – China, they have been making Chinese lanterns, hats and trying out Chinese writing.

SSC visited Hollingworth Lake to begin the John Muir award, they also worked on their chosen country Australia, by making Australian pictures using different materials. They also got messy making model rock medals and Olympic rings. 4J used their creative skills to make pipe cleaner model animations and photographed their completed work. The girls have started their vocational educational course and seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves; they might even be able to give the staff a makeover soon.

Some of the Yr 10 and Yr 11 boys started their vocational educational course - motor mechanics at MANTRA in Middleton.

Key Stage 3 has seen a music theme—Callum had a saxophone lesson with Mrs Lansom Smith, which will now be a weekly event, Tom P along with his classmates enjoyed singing on the Karaoke—Watch out X Factor– Redwood’s got Talent!!!! A new class started at the Shokk Gym whilst other classes have been out and about enjoying visits to Halifax to look at the ‘Old’ style stalls and market. As part of technology Yr8/9 Red went to B&Q for wood. Maryam helped Mrs Friel to read the school prayer in assembly and Sabrina helped to give out the certificates.

6th form have settled into the timetable and it feels as though everyone has been here for years as they have fitted in so well. The first years have settled in really well and seem to be enjoying their new timetable. Louis P, Lee G, Dominic H and Ryan D gave a presentation for Rochdale Bus Station staff to explain how our Independent Travel programme works and to help staff get to know our students. Well done to Louis for helping to deliver the PowerPoint presentation. Eight students have now started extended work placements on Mondays. Ryan - a brand new placement at Rochdale Bus Station as a supervisor. Louis - a two day placement at Hathershaw College in Oldham and will be working as an I.T. technician. We will keep you updated with the progress of the rest of the students. We wish all the students taking part in the programme all the best as they act as ambassadors for 6th Form.
