Landmarks draw in the crowds
Date published: 23 September 2011
Hundreds of people from far and wide visited the borough’s spectacular and intriguing buildings as part of a special Heritage Weekend at the beginning of the month.
A record number of local venues took part in the event too, which celebrates England’s architecture and culture. Thirty six buildings in the borough offered free access, along with a range of tours, events and activities.
One and seventy-five people took a tour of the grade 1 listed Rochdale Town Hall, over 70 visited the Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum and 100 toured St Chad’s Church in Rochdale. 89 visited St John’s RC Church and 149 took a tour around Long Street Methodist Church in Middleton. 76 got chance to check out the progress being made on the restoration of Tonge Hall in Middleton and 73 movie fans stepped back in time for a fascinating look around the former Regal Cinema in Rochdale.
Trips to the top of the municipal offices proved a popular attraction, with visitors appreciating stunning views across the borough.
Tour Guide, Kevin Costigan from Link4Life, said: “We showed areas of the centre dating right back to 1890 when part of the old boiler house was used as a tram depot.
“There were happy memories recalled from guests who learned to swim here as children, and they got the chance to see the new leisure centre currently under construction next door.”
Link4Life Tourist Information Manager, Jane Lowe, said: “Heritage Open Days helped the borough to attract visitors from far and wide, and hundreds have shared very positive feedback with us. I would like to thank everyone who attended and those who dedicated their spare time to opening properties and staging activities. It is their knowledge and enthusiasm that makes things like this happen.”
