Special Constables sworn in

Date published: 19 September 2011

Forty-one Special Constables, including four from the Rochdale borough, have been sworn in to Greater Manchester Police by Chief Constable Peter Fahy.

The 41 volunteer officers have undergone a 13-week training course and will now give up at least 16 hours a month of their own time to work as a special constable.

There are 604 Special Constables in GMP and they have the same powers and uniform as regular officers.

The four specials from the Rochdale borough include Alex Dyson from Shawclough and Jordan Risdale from Heywood.

Chief Constable Fahy, said: “It was great to welcome these special constables to GMP.

“The number of people who want to become Special Constables is growing continually and this demonstrates how many people want to get involved in making their community a better place and improve the areas where they live.

“We recognise the huge difference our volunteers make to people’s lives.

“Special Constables are just one part of GMP's commitment to continue to improve local policing and help to strengthen the links between the police and local communities.”

Christine McGawley JP, Vice Chair of GMPA, said: “The Special Constabulary is vital to the success of the Force.”
