Man investigated over tax fraud for NHS work

Date published: 16 September 2011

A man is being investigated for tax fraud for work he carried out for a number of NHS Trusts over a five year period.

Paul Mainwaring, 53, from Bury, was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of fraud. It is understood he is being investigated for billing NHS Trusts for work using a fake VAT number - allowing him to pocket £65,000.

It is believed Mr Mainwaring carried out consultancy work for Healthy Futures, NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale and Bury NHS Trust.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police, said: “Officers from Bury CID are investigating after a false VAT number was used to take payment for work done for a number of NHS trusts between September 2006 and August 2011.

“On 7 September 2011, a 53-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud and bailed until 31 October 2011, pending further inquiries.”

A spokesperson for the Healthy Futures programme said: “We are aware of police interest in one of our former contractors. However, this person no longer works with the project. In light of the police interest in this matter, it would be wholly inappropriate for us to comment any further.”

Mr Mainwaring is known for his work with the focus group the Patients’ Council.
