Charity football tournament for Famine appeal in Somalia

Date published: 12 September 2011

Young people of Wardleworth participated in a joint project with Wardleworth Football Club to raise money for charity. The charity chosen was Save the Children, who are providing aid for the current famine in Somalia, where relief camps have been set up for affected Somali families.

The event was attended by over 100 youths from around Rochdale and over £100 was raised.

Local area youth worker Saqub Hussain helped organise the youth teams and with the help of local Wardleworth FC manager Azmat Khan.

The event was split into two tournaments: 11-14s and 15-19s.

The under 14s tournament was won by the Bengal Tigers who played well throughout and cruised to victory in the finals.

The under 19s group was tense throughout the tournament, with plenty of tough competition, but the eventual winners had a superb performance by goal keeper Amin to thank, saving a vital goal in the final to give DX the winner’s trophy.

The trophies were sponsored by TJ Refrigeration.

Azmat Khan said: “Wardleworth FC were privileged to be part of a local event; it was an opportunity to give back to the community and the smiles from all the kids taking part were very rewarding”.

Saqub Hussain added: “The event showed the local spirit within Rochdale and the kids were more than generous in giving to people who are in desperate need for help. The money raised is going to a great cause and thanks to all the kids taking part”.
