MEP backs state bid

A Rochdale Euro-MP is backing calls for an independent Palestinian state.

British ministers will make a decision this month on whether to back the Palestinian cause in a vital UN vote to recognise Palestine as a country.

Liberal Democrat Chris Davies claims that promoting justice for Palestinians is the single most important step that can be taken to promote global peace.

He also believes that a peaceful Middle East will make the streets of Rochdale safer.

Palestinians hope that securing international endorsement for an independent state will strengthen their position in future negotiations with Israel, which is in military occupation of their land.

Negotiators claim that as many as 140 countries are expected to back the bid, but the USA has declared its opposition and the EU is divided on the issue. Britain has yet to determine its position.

Chris Davies described Israel's military occupation as a running sore that fosters a sense of injustice across the world.

He said: "Time and again Israel has blocked progress towards a peace agreement while it builds more and more settlements on Palestinian territory.

“When the UK stands by and lets this happen people are justifiably angry.

"With the Middle East changing so fast, this is the time when pressure must be applied on Israel to change its policy and negotiate in good faith."
