Hopwood Hall College at the cutting edge of educational technology
Date published: 08 September 2011
Hopwood Hall College has placed itself at the cutting edge of educational technology by installing ‘virtual PCs’ for all of its students.
The virtual PCs will enable students to use all the software and applications that they normally use whilst in the College from their own home; so a business studies student can use Microsoft Office applications on their own PC even if they don’t have the software on their own computer; design students can use software such as Adobe Creative Suite that would be too expensive to buy themselves.
This technology allows them to learn in their own time and is free. As an added benefit, they can also access all the files that they use in their college studies whilst at home.
Students will simply login via an internet connection to a ‘virtual desktop’ which looks just like the one they see on college PCs. They can even do this from an internet café or indeed from any PC, anywhere in the world.
Simon Evans, Director of Technology & Innovation said: "This is not just pioneering technology; it adds real value to the learning experience of all of our students and also reduces the Total Cost of Ownership, power consumption and CO2 emissions for Hopwood Hall College’s desktop technology. We are all extremely proud and excited to be a leader in these new technologies.”
