At the end of last term the College were delighted to celebrate the success of one of their popular Year 10 pupils, Bradley Smith. Bradley is blind but that hasn’t stopped him from embracing the “Can Do” enterprising capability in all that he does.
July 8th 2011 was a day fifteen year-old Bradley will never forget. Following his successful participation in the BBS National Football Championships in Birmingham last month, a visit was made to the College by Jonathan Gribbin, an England international blind footballer. Jon gave a talk to the year 7 pupils in assembly and presented Bradley with an England training kit. Following this and the skills workshop he took part in after the assembly, Bradley is following up the opportunity presented by Jon and the Royal National College in Hereford to train with them.
The England team, based at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford played host to the last IBSA Blind World Football Championships in 2010. The event was won by Brazil, who narrowly overcame Spain 1-0 in the final. England finished in fourth place, having lost out 0-1 to China in a hard-fought play-off. Full details of the event are available on www.blind2010.com
Jonathan Gribbin is one of the most talented players in the world. Prior to losing his sight, he played for the England Partially Sighted squad but moved to the blind team once his sight deteriorated greatly. With quick feet and fluid movement, Jon is able to lead the line with confidence.
