Litter lout fined
Date published: 31 August 2011
A litter lout has been stung with a bill of £290 after he threw a bag of waste from a car in Middleton.
David Edwards, of Rowrah Crescent, was travelling as a passenger in the vehicle in February when he was spotted by a witness throwing the litter on Pooley Close.
Officers from Rochdale Borough Council’s Environmental Enforcement team tracked him down through the vehicle registration number of the car.
Edwards pleaded guilty at Rochdale Magistrates Court and was ordered to pay a total of £290 in fines and costs.
Councillor Martin Burke, Cabinet Member for Internal and External Environmental Services, said: “Dropping litter is wrong regardless of whether people are on foot or in a vehicle and we will do everything possible to ensure that offenders are punished.
“Litter is an eyesore which can give an area a neglected look and lead to more serious forms of anti-social behaviour. Tackling it and making our communities more pleasant places to live is one of our major environmental priorities.”
