Day care centre opens its doors

Date published: 30 August 2011

A new centre has opened in Heywood to provide day services to adults with learning disabilities.

Service users, their families and staff have celebrated the official opening of the Pine Street centre at a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The new building, over two levels, has a sensory room, kitchen, personal care rooms and activity rooms on both floors. The upper level activity room will cater for service users who don’t have mobility issues and includes a pool table and computers.

Councillor Linda Robinson, Cabinet member for Adult Care, Health and Housing for Rochdale Borough Council, who opened the centre said: “This is a positive development for users and I’m pleased it’s come to fruition. It’s a fantastic building and a safe environment for adults with learning disabilities to make use of and enjoy.”

The centre has replaced two previous bases, at Sutherland Road and in Bamford that were closed last year.

Rachel Law, Head of Provider Services for Learning Disabilities at Rochdale Borough Council said “It’s great that we’ve now got a new facility that’s located in the centre of Heywood. It’ll help service users get around the local community and access more facilities, such as the new Phoenix Centre.”
