Special contribution to tackling recent disorder

Date published: 23 August 2011

Greater Manchester Police is hoping to boost the ranks of its special constables following their immense effort supporting the Force during the recent disorder.

The Force’s special constables completed a massive 7,000 hours work to support policing in six days following disorder in Manchester and Salford.

They completed the duties from Tuesday 9 August when disturbances hit through to Sunday 14 August.

Since the events the Force has received a stream of enquiries from people wanting to become special constables and is now hoping to expand the numbers.

Chief Constable Peter Fahy said: “The special constables had a vital role to play during the recent disturbances. They immediately responded to the events and put in a tremendous effort. I have heard many stories about how they went the extra mile to help local communities.

“When the call went out special constables from across Greater Manchester came forward. I know many gave up their own time and holidays to be able to support policing, and we are grateful to their employers who have allowed them time to work as special constables.

“Their contribution often goes unnoticed so I am delighted that more people have recognised what they did and want to join. It is a great opportunity to make a real difference to communities across Greater Manchester.”

GMP currently has 580 special constables and most were involved in supporting the policing operation to deal with the disorder.

Anyone interested in becoming a special constable can find out more on the GMP website www.gmp.police.uk where they can submit a special constabulary interest form.
