Results day marks end of sixth form

Date published: 18 August 2011

The last ever group of students to study for A-levels at Oulder Hill Sixth Form Centre collected their results today (18 August).

The year group, made up of 44 students, collected the results, marking an end to two years of study and also the end of the sixth form.

Results day at the school was filled with mixed emotions; for the students it was one of celebration, and for staff it marked the end of an era.

However, the sixth form went out with a bang – with every single student passing their subjects and 14 per cent of the students gaining either and A* or an A.

One of the sixth form’s success stories is 18-year-old Emma Kershaw from Norden, who achieved a grade A in all of her A-level subjects of Maths, Italian and Dance.

Ms Kershaw, said: “I’m really pleased all the hard work has paid off.

“I wasn’t expecting my grades to be that good – I knew I had worked hard but I didn’t want to get my hopes up.”

Ms Kershaw will continue her studies at Salford University in September where she will read Italian with French.

She said: “I’m not sure exactly what I want to do when I finish University but part of the course is to spend a year abroad which I think will give me lots of opportunities.”

Ms Kershaw added: “Oulder Hill has been a really good place to learn, all the teachers have been great.”

Deputy Headteahcer, Jon Collins, said: “It is a momentous day, there has been a long tradition of A-level study here so it is a day of mixed emotions. It is sad because this is the last group of sixth form students, it’s lovely because the results are fabulous, some have done very well indeed and it is a time of optimism – the new Sixth Form College is a good thing for the future students of Rochdale.”

Mr Collins also praised the sixth form staff who he said has been a fantastic support to the pupils.
