Results delight for sixth form’s first students

Date published: 18 August 2011

The first ever students to study at the Rochdale Sixth Form College collected their AS-level results today (18 August).

The students who are in the first year of their two year A-level courses flooded into the college this morning to collect their results.

The college, which opened in September for its first intake, has around 500 students.

The results the students collected today will enable them to progress into Year 13 at the College.

Amongst those collecting their results were budding film makers, wannabe writers, doctors and sports fanatics.

17-year-old Sidra Ayub achieved grades A's in all of her AS level subjects; she studied Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Psychology.

She hopes to study medicine in the future.

She said: “I couldn’t sleep last night I was so nervous, it has been hard work.”

Hassan Latif, also gained 4 A's. Mr Latif is studying Maths, Chemistry, Biology and History.

Other students celebrating their AS results include: George Hilton who achieved three grade A's and one B, James Bannon who achieved three A's and one D, Matthew Kershaw who gained three A's and one B, Christian Turner, who achieved two A's and two B's and Lauren Oddy who gained three A's and one B.

Principal, Julian Appleyard, said: “These exceptional results stand testament to the hard work of both the students and staff, and I couldn’t be prouder of their achievements.

"It is particularly gratifying to see how far the students have progressed, with many achieving far higher grades than would be predicted by their exam results at 16.

"These results put Rochdale Sixth Form College on the map not just regionally but nationally, and to have delivered such results in the first year is a phenomenal achievement.

“This excellent set of results not only sets the standard for future years, but will also give these students a strong foundation on which to start their second year of A Level courses.

"Rochdale should be very proud of its young people.”

Twenty one students who transferred from Hopwood Hall to the College for their final term and a half of A-level studies have received their A2 results. Achieving a 100 per cent pass rate, in all but one subject.
