Chance to explore the borough’s heritage

Date published: 16 August 2011

To celebrate the borough’s wealth of architecture and culture, buildings across Rochdale that are usually closed to the public or charge admission will be open, free of charge, for a special Heritage Weekend in September.

From Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 September buildings of every age, style and function will be open to the public along with a range of tours, events and activities.

Some of the buildings that will be open include:

  • Regal Cinema in Rochdale
  • Tonge Hall in Middleton
  • The 230ft Municipal Offices in Rochdale, known as the ‘Black Box’
  • The Old Police Station in Heywood
  • Long Street Methodist Church in Middleton
  • Rochdale Town Hall
  • Bamford United Reformed Church
  • Victorian Gothic St Luke’s Parish Church in Heywood

Also on Sunday 11 September as part of the Heritage Weekend, in the Great Hall of Rochdale Town Hall, Rochdale Rotary Club is looking out for people to display and sell their products. As the Town Hall is open to the public on this day, this enables people to browse and buy whilst taking in a conducted tour of the Town Hall. The restaurant will be open for snacks and afternoon teas.

The free 2011 programme is available from Rochdale Tourist Information Centre at Touchstones or from your local library. It is also online at www.link4life.org/whatson
Booking in advance will be required for some buildings and events. Phone Rochdale Tourist Information on 01706 924928 or email tic@link4life.org
